Who is involved in the collaboration within crime scene investigating? • Lab workers • Coroners • Agents – FBI & SBI
Lab Workers • They are to go to the scene of the crime to investigate and examine it (U.S. Bureau of Labor) • They look for physical, chemical, and biological evidence on the scene (U.S. Bureau of Labor) • The evidence gets photographed, sketched, and persevered so it can be taken to the lab (U.S. Bureau of Labor) • Once the evidence it in the lab they examine it using different test and equipment such as microscopes (U.S. Bureau of Labor)
Coroners • They determine the time frame of the death as well as the cause (National Career Services) • They will examine the body on the crime scene as well as some of the evidence taken to the lab (National Career Center) • Some evidence within the lab can contain toxins or any other substance that could be the cause of the death (National Career Services) • The death will be documented as a “homicide, suicide, accident, natural, [or as a] undetermined” death depending on what the coroners are able to recover from the body and evidence (Official Website of Indianapolis and Marion) • Once they have determine the time frame and cause they are to document and report the information they found (National Career Services)
Agents – FBI & SBI • The FBI are federal workers but the SBI works for the state of North Carolina • The SBI only deals with crimes related to drugs, arson, election, child abuse, theft, or computer crimes against children (Cooper) • The FBI are the ones who would deal with the murders and other misdemeanors (Cooper) • Depending on the crime, one of these agents will be searching for the criminal once they have all the information that they need from the lab worker and coroners (Cooper)
TV shows involving Crime Scene Investigating • CSI, Law and Order, and NCIS show and explain the process of crime scene investigating based off previous experiences that either them or other works have had • John Grossman states "I think it makes it much harder for the experts. Juries now expect high-level science to be done on lots of cases where again we don't have the resources to do them and in many cases, the science doesn't exist to do them” (Rath). • The shows put pressure on our workers here in the real world because we don’t have that technology that is as advanced as the tv shows (Rath)
