  1. Response to Intervention Sherkeyer Jackson and Anna Lloyd September 9, 2013

  2. RTI facts • definition - the change in a student’s behavior or performance as a function of an intervention. • (Gresham, 2001) • Federal Law – IDEA 2004 • General Education Program

  3. Response to Intervention • RTI seeks to prevent academic failure through early intervention, frequent progress measurement, and increasingly intensive research-based instructional interventions for children who continue to have difficulty.

  4. Tier 3 • Intensive individualized instruction • More frequent progress monitoring Increased intensity and individualized instruction Students below cut point may continue in Tier 2 or be moved up to Tier 3 • ____________________________________ • Tier 2 • core instruction plus: • Small group instruction based on research based practices • More frequent progress monitoring Students return to Tier 1 when achievement is above the cut point Students achieving below cut point are placed into Tier 2 • ________________________________________________________ • Tier 1 • Core instruction with differentiated instruction • Screenings: Universal screening/benchmark assessment

  5. Tier 1 • Classroom Instruction • Differentiation • Progress Monitoring • 8-12 weeks • Are routine classroom instructional modifications sufficient to help the student achieve academic success?

  6. Tier 2 • 8-12 weeks • 3 times a week for 30 minutes • Tailored to the needs of the learner • Students with significant skill gaps • Research based strategies • Small group – 5-6 students • Can an individualized intervention plan carried out in a general education setting bring the student up to the academic level of his/her peers?

  7. Literacy Textbook materials Journey 95 % phonics screener RIDE Math Kumon Word Problems Marilyn Burns’ Do the Math Problem types/Leveled problems Khan Academy (web) Go Math Interventions Tier 2 Interventions • Behavior • Develop a behavior plan with the team.

  8. Tier 3 • 8-12 weeks • 5 times a week for 30 minutes • Research based strategies used for the entire period. • Frequent progress monitoring • Small group 2-3 students • Most intensive • What ongoing supports does this student require and in what settings?

  9. Literacy Journey’s Math Go Math Tier 3 Intervention • Behavior • Behavior plan

  10. Assessments to Use • DRA/WRAP • Diebels • Formative classroom assessments • Summative classroom assessments • Behavior sheet

  11. Progress Monitoring should: • Be administered repeatedly • Be relevant to instructional strategies • Use appropriate curriculum that addresses the area of need. • Assess skills in standards • Be sensitive to small increments of growth

  12. Intervention Process and Procedures Step 1 • Classroom teacher notes difficulty and places student in Tier 1 while monitoring progress Step 2 • If the student fails to make progress, the teacher refers student for Tier 2 to SBIT.

  13. Intervention Process and Procedures Step 2 • SBIT team collects data from teacher • Determines likely reason for academic performance • Sets a goal to close the gap

  14. S Intervention Process and Procedures Step 3 Student is assigned to Tier 2 • Classroom teacher begins interventions and documents progress. • Progress monitoring is compared to the goal. • A new intervention may be attempted if student shows no progress within a 6 week time period.

  15. S Intervention Process and Procedures Step 4 • if the student does not respond to several well-implemented interventions the student is referred onto Tier 3. Step 5 • Repeat steps 3 and 4 in Tier 3.

  16. S Intervention Process and Procedures Step 6 SBIT will dismiss student or refer a student for special education testing and services.

  17. Frequently Asked Questions Are all interventions for RTI to be done by a certified staff member? YES! How long does a student stay in each Tier? 8-12 weeks Do I have to use the same intervention for the entire 8-12 weeks? YES! You must! If a student makes progress during those weeks, then what? Continue the intervention – it’s working!  Do I have to complete any documentation for my intervention students? YES!

  18. Frequently Asked Questions Can I move a student to Tier 3? No. SBIT in combination with the teacher will determine the next step for the student. Is all of this really necessary? Yes. This is a federal, state and district mandate. Where can I find the documentation forms? An electronic copy has been sent to you. Ms. Lloyd also has copies of the documentation forms. Check your folder.  What do I do if a student needs glasses? After speaking with the parent, Ms. Smith-Baker or Nurse Carrie can help get glasses for students who need them and are unable to afford them.

  19. S Questions? Thank you for your continued help in teaching and loving our students!
