Lecture 13:Emerging Technologies Increasing User Performance
Overview • Housekeeping • Assignment 2 YouTube • Emerging Technology Trends – Supporting users with technology • Technology Planning and Budgeting • Next Week
Housekeeping • How did Assignment 2 go? • Assignment 2 YouTube • Record Video Introduction and Conclusion • Narrate PowerPoint presenting major findings using the outline • Good presenting is sharing what you have learned with us • Let’s demonstrate • This is what it looks like (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JDq4k3vJds&feature=youtu.be) • NC Student Library Ambassador Program • My Technology Leadership Experience (article)
Aligning emerging technologies with user needs • User-centered Design – Inside Out Approach centered on TAM
Aligning emerging technologies with employee needs • Identify primary KSA’s (knowledge, skills, and abilities) • TPCK • Not just technology training • IN CONTEXT of Performance • This technology will help you do XYZ better • What technology? Technological Knowledge • What content and context? Content Knowledge • How to best do it? Pedagogy Knowledge
Emerging Technologies for Librarians and ITF’s 1. Communications and Collaboration • Meeting software • Video conferencing • Google suite • Cloud-based file sharing • Strategic planning and informatics 2. Productivity Software • Intermediate Office Suite Features • Word processing and formatting • Presentations (local and cloud-based) • Excel budgeting and project management 3. Social Networking and Web design • The Big Five – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Linked-in, and Word-Press (and other blogging software) • Etc. 5. Networking • Basic login and connectivity 6. ILS and database • Become familiar with biggest vendors 7. Hardware and Software basics • Devices • Basic hardware maintenance • Basic software maintenance 8. Instructional technologies Kahn Academy Other emerging supplements and databases for instruction Training, teaching, workshops, etc.
Professional Development • Learn on the job • Webinars, conferences, social media • “Do stuff” with technology • Ask users – learn what they what you to learn • PLANNING • Can’t know everything • Learn based on needs of your users.
Instructional Technology Standards • Nets-C Standards • NCATE Standards • NC Professional Technology Facilitator Standards
Technology Management • Planning and Budgeting • Technology Heuristics (rules of thumb): • Technology costs more now than later • Technology must be maintained and replaced • Technology should be allocated across the board and not based on position or value. It must be equitable • Technology must meet the EES (Effective, Efficient, and Satisfying) and TAM (useful and easy-to-use) criterion. • Technology must be quality first, scalable second, and generalized third • More is usually more when paying for technology • Standard shelf-life for hardware is three years, software is two years
Technology Management • Remember networked systems – network, hardware, and software • Implement technology change slowly, deliberately, and strategically • REMEMBER TAM – employee buy-in and usefulness essential.
Technology Management • Budgeting • Line-item – based on what you have spent in the past • Zero-sum – based on what you need • Let’s look at an example
Next Week • View and respond to at least two additional presentations • Technology skills overview and assessment
