  7. Mauritius??? • 3/5 the size of Rhode Island • 1.2 million people • Speak Creole, French, and English (99%) • Population: • 51% Hindu • 32% Creole • 15 % Muslim • 2% Chinese • Republic since 1968 • Economic growth 6%

  9. Why Mauritius?(Sept 99) • Our love for the Mauritians: • The need of the Word of God and new congregations • Our love for the Church: • The need of a spiritual support • Our love for God: • The need to respond to His Call Idolatry Rose Hill Church

  10. The Church at Rose Hill “(…) There are approximately 35 still meeting at Rose Hill. The ones from Port Louis who separated themselves do not appear to be meeting together. All services are conducted in French, some of the members speak English, all speak Creole” --Ken Wilson, visiting American missionary

  13. 1995 Evangelization Campaign • 3 days, 6 Christians • 1000 Homes visited • 750 correspondence courses • 375 finished courses • 100 requests for one-to-one Bible studies THIS REQUEST COULD NOT BE FILLED

  14. The Assemblies of God • Start in 1970, like the Church of Christ • Now: • 260 assemblies • 50 to 400 members each one • 60% of former Hindus • They are looking for bible teachers

Our Gospel • God, the Creator of the universe, gave His Son, Jesus Christ, as King and Savior, to humanity, when He died on the cross, was resurrected and ascended to heaven, conforming to His plan and the revelations of the prophets. • All men and women who are baptized into this faith and deny themselves receive the forgiveness of their sins, Eternal Life, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and become members of the Church of Jesus Christ.

Prayer and Study • We want the Holy Spirit to guide us • Acts 16:6, BBE “6 (…) the Holy Spirit did not let them take the word into Asia; • We are servants of the Word of God • 2 Timothy 4:2, ASV “preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”

Evangelism • Use or passed experience in: • Distributions • Door knocking • Public preaching • Home Bible study • Lectureship • Bible correspondence courses • One to one Bible study • Or things not yet done • Show Christian love by hospitality • Plant several regular places of worship and study • Learn Creole and be close to the Mauritians

  29. Why Train Leaders? • To follow the example of Christ and Paul • To build a mature Church to: • Glorify God • Be self-perpetuating • Evangelize • Plant Churches

  30. Start a New Church • To not build on the foundation of another • To not destabilize existing native leaders • To accomplish God’s Will

  31. Women’s Ministry • Children ministry • Mentor and teach women • Take care of their families • Hospitality • Community outreach

Serving the Community • Touch people with the compassion of Jesus • Be involved in: • Hospital ministry • Feeding the hungry • Clothing the needy • Nurturing marriages and children • Counseling Jer 29:7, "Seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its welfare you will have welfare."

Related Project • “More than half of the missionaries go back home after the first two years!” “The main problems are not doctrinal, they are personality conflicts and family problems” • 4 team members have experienced team failure. • For a week or two, we want to encourage and feed our "battle fatigued" soldiers: • Listening to them • Praying with them • Making them working with us A Sabbatical Place for Missionaries Bob Grigg a good example. He is fine now!

How long? 5 years seems to be a minimum: • To put into place of the people, structure, working habits (worship, evangelization, community service, edification, mission) • Short but: • Rose Hill Church will help with: • Its experience • Its network of contacts • 5 team members are already bilingual • Yet we do see ourselves staying longer
