  3. David Organizes Priesthood/Levites • 1 Chron. 28: 13,19 David wasn’t meddling in God’s affairs. He was directed by God. • 1 Chron. 23: 2-6 Summary of Organization of 38,000 Levites • 24,000 to serve the House of God • 6,000 to be officials and judges • 4,000 to be gatekeepers • 4,000 to be musicians

Duties of Levites Defined • Reason the duties changed: 23:26 • Wait on Priests • Serve in the House of the Lord (Physical Plant) • Purification of the holy things • Baking the showbread and handling of meal offerings • Daily praise of God • Offer burnt offerings (!) • Keep the Tabernacle/Temple, Keep the Holy Place, Keep the sons of Aaron (Priests)

Organization of Priests and serving Levites • 24 major houses descended from Aaron became 24 courses of Priests. • Each took turns serving at Temple • Order chosen by lot (God decided) • Luke 1:5 This organizational plan still followed almost 1,000 year later. • 24,000 Levites serving in Temple ordered in the same manner

  8. David’s Final Address • Urges people to follow God • Urges Solomon to follow God and build the Temple • Gives Solomon the plans of the Temple and the organization of the Priests and Levites • Repeats his plea to Solomon to finish the Temple and rely upon God

  9. David’s Influence and Spirituality • The people are moved to make a large donation of their own. Vs. 9 • David’s prayer: • Praised God’s greatness • Acknowledges that all riches come from Him • Acknowledges that they are only giving back. • Claims righteous motivation for giving • Prays that the people will continue to follow God • Prays that Solomon will stay strong in the Lord

David vs. Moses • Moses gave pattern for Tabernacle, David for Temple • Moses organized ceremonial worship of feast days, David organized musical worship of Temple • Moses instituted the priesthood and gave the Levites their duties. David organized the Priesthood and updated the duties of the Levites.
