2010 Highway Safety Plan: Targeting a Reduction in Fatalities and Injuries

  1. 2010 Highway Safety Plan Decrease fatalities from 121 in 2008 to 96 in 2010. (2009 = 131) Decrease serious injuries 13% from the 2008 figure of 925 to 805 in 2010. (2009 = 842) (a) Decrease fatalities/VMT from 2008 level of 1.43 to 1.13 in 2010. (2009 = 1.55) (b) Decrease rural fatalities/VMT from 1.78 in 2008 to 1.39 in 2010.

  2. 2010 HSP (c) Decrease urban fatalities/VMT from 0.63 in 2008 to 0.54 in 2010. • Decrease the number of unrestrained occupant fatalities by 19% from 60 to 49 in 2010. (2009 = 79) • Decrease alcohol impaired fatalities 22% from 2008 figure of 35 to 27 in 2010. (2009 = 45) • Decrease speeding related fatalities 21% from 2008 figure of 35 to 28 in 2010. (2009 = 38)

  3. 2010 HSP 7.Decrease motorcyclist fatalities 17% from 2008 level of 15 to 12 in 2010. (2009 = 16) • Decrease unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities 10% from 2008 figure of 11 to 10 in 2010. (2009 = 14) • Decrease drivers age 20 or younger in fatal crashes 16% from 2008 base of 23 to 19 in 2010. (2009 = 20)

  4. 2010 HSP 10. Reduce pedestrian fatalities 50% from 10 in 2008 to 5 in 2010. (2009 =4) 11. Increase seat belt use in passenger vehicles 1.3% from 71.8% in 2008 to 73.1% in 2010. (2009 = 72.1%)
