A Postcard from ScotlandHaving a great time. Wish I was there….Maria Fox
A Flight to Sydney from Scotland • 17,000 kilometres, offering ~24 hours of me-time on-board aircraft and lots of hours to enjoy a favourite airport beverage • And to burn ~900 kilos of aviation fuel, producing 4 tons of CO2 …. • …..per passenger • Climatologists currently recommend stabilising at a maximum of 2 tons per person per year
The Future of Flight • Available aviation fuel production has probably peaked • Demand for aviation fuel is predicted to rise • Passenger flights at ~5% per annum • Freight flights at ~6% per annum • Military use – who knows?
Are Conferences Sustainable? • How much longer will long haul flights fit our (academic) budget? • Our climate-conscience?
What Might We Do? • Plan now! • Move towards virtual conferences • Use on-line videos of talks, provide slides, set up Wikis for each paper to allow Q&A • Lots of beneficial side-effects, but logistically non-trivial • Accept papers without requiring authors to attend to present them
Second Life ICAPS? Rao says : OK, we’ve heard enough, thanks….
