In 2009, the world faced numerous devastating disasters, from wildfires consuming landscapes in Australia and California to catastrophic earthquakes in Indonesia and Italy. Cyclones and typhoons wreaked havoc across the Pacific, while floods and landslides displaced communities in North Dakota and the Philippines. Volcanic eruptions in the Philippines prompted mass evacuations, and winter storms blanketed regions with heavy snow. This photographic chronicle captures the human and environmental impacts of these natural calamities.
