  2. Ofsted Briefing Notes • Overall effectiveness has a greater emphasis on literacy • If literacy progress is judged to be inadequate then the school will be judged to be inadequate • The emphasis needs to be on the whole school taking responsibility for developing literacy

  3. We are already using: Common annotation Students have this in their organiser– we should now be marking according to the marking grid

  4. Literacy AF Posters We are already using these in each classroom

  5. Know your connectives Use of connectives explicitly taught – poster in each classroom We are already using these in each classroom

  6. Ofsted also now says that: • Reading: All pupils need to be able to access the whole curriculum • Reading aloud will happen in secondary schools

  7. Implications: RA and SA below 8 yrs • Basic rules for literacy not been absorbed • Very low self-esteem • Worry about reading aloud • Reading back notes copied from board impossible • Extra information during writing not absorbed • Copying might be letter by letter • Rather be seen as clowns/lazy

  8. Implications: RA and SA between 8 and 10 • Can access simple text without hidden meanings so may appear to manage with support • Still miss large chunks of information unless checked orally • Eligible for a reader at GCSE • Words with more than 2 syllables will be very difficult

Implications: RA and SA above 10 but below 14 • Won’t want to be noticed in class • Realise that their literacy skills are limited • Some strategies for managing but not always reflecting their true level of understanding • Problems interpreting written questions in a stressful situation • Handwriting speed may be adequate so not eligible for readers/scribes

  10. However…… • Out of 223 Year 10 students, 7.6% have a reading age of below 10 and 6.2 % of those have a reading age of below 8 • 65.9% of Year 10 students have a reading age of between 10 and 13.99.
