Speech sounds consist of vowels and consonants which if combined will result to syllable. Words may be formed in a single syllable or multiple syllable • The set of symbols that represent the sounds of speech are called phonetic symbols. Speech sounds refer to phonetic. • Generally, speech sounds fall into two groups: vowels and consonants.
VOWEL SOUNDS • are produced through a free outward flow of breath CONSONANT SOUNDS • are produced when there is obstruction of the flow of breath.
CRITERIA FOR DESCRIBING VOWEL SOUNDS NOTE: Linguists also describes vowels in terms tenseness/laxness
HEIGHT – how high or low the tongue is NOTE: Linguists also describes vowels in terms tenseness/laxness
