  1. Concurrent Engineering Presenter: Kou Song & Alan Cosentino Course: ETLS 504 Excellence in Operations Professor: Thomas Becker Date: 10/18/08

  2. Topics • What is concurrent engineering • When did concurrent engineering develop • Who were the leaders that began to develop it • Features and Benefits of concurrent engineering in the medical device industry • Pros and Cons of concurrent engineering in the medical device industry • Examples Abbott Labs, Medtronic, etc. • Conclusion: • Q&A

  3. What is concurrent engineering • Concurrent Engineering is a methodical way of systematically teamwork to rapidly respond to customer expectation during new product development • Make quick decision and be done right the first time • Brings efficiency towards development process • Ability to develop new products faster and not repeat the same task • Incorporate more parallel development of both product and manufacturing processes during the product life cycle • New process should benefit the company and work towards the companies strategy

  4. When did concurrent engineering develop • Current Engineering sometimes called Simultaneous Engineering or Integrated Product Development (IPD) • Was defined by the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) in its December 1988 report 'The Role of Concurrent Engineering in Weapons System Acquisition' as a systematic approach to the integrated, concurrent design of products and their related processes, including manufacture and support. This approach is intended to cause the developers, from the outset, to consider all elements of the product life cycle from conception through disposal, including quality, cost, schedule, and user requirements. • url: http://www.johnstark.com/fwcce.html
