  2. While the relationship between Kahu and KoroApirana is important, the relationship between Kahu and Nanny Flowers in important too. • Why?

  3. Because she comes from a tribe with different traditions. Her tribe believes in matrilineal descent, the ability for nobility and leader ship to descend through the female side of a family. • Find quote(s) that support this.

  4. This goes against what KoroApirana says, as he is adamant that the lineage can only be passed down via males (patrilineal). • Find quotes to support this.

  5. Nanny Flowers provides the support and gentle nudging that Kahu needs to stand strong and be herself. Through this relationship, we are shown the importance of tradition in this story. • Find quotes to support this.

  6. However, the relationship between KoroApirana and Kahu is important too. It is her hunger for her Koro’s affection that drives her. • Her sneaky attendance of the men-only wananga; the fact that she pushes herself to do well at kapahaka and her korero are all to gain his approval. • Find quotes that illustrate these points.
