Gaston United Soccer Club Philosophy • GUSC coaching focuses on the improvement of both individual skills and small team group play, which is essential at the 6-12 age groups. • GUSC believes that the game of soccer is made up of a series of movements and plays linked together by a small number of players (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, etc.) in different parts of the field. It’s these small group plays that bring out the beauty in the game of soccer! We don't want to discourage team play but rather: • Focus on individual player skill development • Play small-sided games in recreation/challenge/classic until U13

Therefore, we have adopted the following developmental philosophy for all levels: • Technical skills: Passing, Receiving, Dribbling, Heading… • Creativity: 1v1 moves, 2v2, 3v3… Confidence with the ball • Tactical Awareness: Critical Thinker, Problem solving, Visualizing options on the pitch • Tempo: Speed of play, Running w/without the ball, Team speed, Individual speed, Working at top speed, Strength on the ball • Attacking: Individual and Group - Finishing - The art of shooting, Composure, Final 1/3 awareness of shot selections, Awareness of 1st, 2nd, 3rd attackers, An understanding of the red zone • Defending: Individual and Group – Recovery, Tracking, Pressure, Cover, Balance, Awareness of 1st, 2nd, 3rd defenders • Positional responsibilities: every position on the pitch is very important to the success of the team

A foundation for the future! • EVERY STEP IS A TOUCH: To build confidence in every touch • SAY NO TO KICK AND RUN: integrating or combining Possession as well as Direct play into our teaching • SAY YES TO BEAUTIFUL and INTELLIGENT SOCCER! • ENCOURAGE our athletes to dream of playing and competing in College or University, the USA Olympic team, the USA National team and at the Professional level

  7. Gaston County Demographics • 200,000 people in Gaston County • 13,000 U5 level untapped potential players • No local recreation program currently teaching small-sided games • Large Hispanic population

College Preparation • Monitor student-athletes academic as well as athletic development • Awareness of NCAA High School Academic requirements and guidelines from 9th – 12th Grade • Awareness of financial opportunities for the student-athletes to attend Colleges or Universities • Encourage a level of excellence for our Club players to attend Colleges and Universities of their choices while competing in soccer
