  4. Tsar Nicholas II: Born: 1868 • Tsar: 1894 - 1917 • Believed he was the absolute ruler anointed by God • More interested in the war, than what was happening to his Russian people. • Weak ruler

  10. 1905 Revolution- Bloody SundayJanuary 22, 1905 • Peaceful protest: Men, women, children • Went to the Tsar’s palace with a petition asking the Tsar for help to improve living conditions • not for an overthrow of gov’t • Imperial soldiers fire on the protestors

  11. March Revolution 1917 • 10,000 women demanded “Peace and Bread” • Czar Nicholas orders guards to break up riots and shoot if necessary. • Guards join the rioters • Czar steps down without support • Provisional gov’t is established • End of 300 year old Romanov dynasty

Lenin and the Bolsheviks • Bolsheviks were a political party dedicated to revolution • Goal: destroy capitalist system and overthrow the provisional government • Championed the views of the people • Promised to end war • Land to the peasants • Factories would be controlled by committees of workers • slogan- “ Peace, Land, Bread”

  15. Bolshevik Revolution (November 6 1918) * Provisional Government overthrown • Kerensky flees to the United States • Signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, Russia was out of the war. • Rename themselves communists Next Slide
