  3. The “Yellow Press” • They printed sensational and exaggerated stories.

  4. Pressure grew on President William McKinley to use force to help the Cubans

  5. McKinley sent the battleship USS Maine to Havana, Cuba

  6. Feb. 15, 1898: the Maine exploded in Havana harbor. More than 260 Americans were killed.

  7. US “yellow press” newspapers blamed Spain and demanded war.

  9. The US defeated Spanish forces in the Philippines with help from Filipinos.
