Interesting Facts About NCES • The oldest agency to collect data and statistics on education • 25 collections: preK-12, higher education, adults, and institutions • Objective facts: data, tools, stats, and issue briefs • DO NOT provide explanations & implications for results • Has rich data but data are not used effectively!

  3. Who can have access to NCES data? • Everyone! • Free!

  4. Types of Data http://nces.ed.gov/ • Assessments • Early Childhood • Elementary & Secondary • International • Library • Postsecondary Education

  5. Assessements • National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP): reading, mathematics, science, writing, U.S. history, civics, geography, and the arts.   • National Assessments of Adult Literacy (NAAL): Adult literacy

  6. Early Childhood • Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS): Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) and Birth Cohort (ECLS-B). Provide detailed information on children's health, early care and early school experiences. • National Household Education Survey (NHES): School Readiness and Parent and Family Involvement in Education. Surveys on adult education, parent and family involvement in education, before- and after-school programs and activities, civic involvement, early childhood program participation, household library use, school readiness, and school safety and discipline.

Postsecondary • Baccalaureate and Beyond: undergraduate education, future employment, and education expectations. • Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study: postsecondary education and into the labor force, as well as family formation. • Career/Technical Education Statistics: secondary and postsecondary levels, adults seeking work-related education and training. • National Postsecondary Student Aid Study: how students and their families pay for postsecondary education. • National Study of Postsecondary Faculty: faculty and instructional staff at public and private institutions.

Restricted Use Data License • Public data: certain fields are deleted or collapsed • Restricted data: sensitive data are available • Data are on loan to organizations • Conditions: 1) Only authorized personnel may have access to data (including janitor) 2) An office space to store data 3) Store data on computer not connecting to internet
