  12. School Leadership Preparation The Education Specialist degree, Masters degree and Administration & Supervision certificate prepare teachers to be school leaders. The Administration & Supervision certificate requires: • A masters degree in a related educational field • No GRE scores • 30 hours of coursework & 3 hours of internship credit • Successful completion of the SLLA The MEd degree requires: • A bachelors degree • GRE scores for admission • 33 hours of coursework & 3 hours of internship credit • Successful completion of a comprehensive exam and the SLLA The EdSdegee requires: • A masters degree in a related educational field • GRE scores for admission • 30 hours of coursework & 3 hours of internship credit • Successful completion of a comprehensive exam and the SLLA

Program Basics • Admission Requirements • Online application • Decisions made three times a year – 2/1, 6/1, 10/15 • Advising • Students are assigned an advisor upon admission • Students may take courses as planned with their advisor • Courses are available on a published schedule • Length of Study • Part-time enrollment: 1-2 courses/semester • Typically 2-3 years depending on course load • Computer Access - Internet access required for hybrid courses

  14. Course of Study School Leadership Preparation Approved program for Administrative Certificate, MEd* and EdS * MEd requires 3 additional credit hours of an elective.

Endorsement VDOE Requirements for K12 Administration & Supervision Endorsement A candidate for the add-on endorsement must have: 1) A masters degree 2) Completed three years of successful, full-time experience in a public school or accredited nonpublic school in an instructional personnel position that requires licensure in Virginia • Completed an approved program of study in administration and supervision • Completed a 320 hour internship • Passed the School Leaders’ Licensure Assessment (SLLA)

  26. Program of Study • Integration of theory, experience, and research. • First and second year: Strong core of theory and research • Field-based practicum projects • Customized areas of specialization • Third year: Study of a problem of practice culminating in a Capstone Dissertation

Overview of Coursework • Core leadership courses (18 hours) • 6 courses that address the key facets of leadership • Foundations of Leadership Theory • Cognitive Dimensions of Leadership • Visioning, Planning & Strategizing for Success • Designing Learning Environments • Optimizing Human Capital in Organizations • Developing Organizational Capacity • Research sequence (12 hours) • 4 courses taught in tandem with leadership courses • Focus on applied research methods and program evaluation
