In July 1943, American and British troops took control of the Italian island of Sicily. On September 8,1943 Italy's new government surrendered to the allies, but German troops continued to fight which brought a long struggle to the allies.

  3. D-Day • On June 6, 1944, a day known as D-Day more than 155,000 American, British, and Canadian troops crossed the English Chanel. They landed on five beaches at Normandy. • Four beaches quickly became German opposition, but the fifth beach known as Omaha Beach Americans met a fierce German defense. By days end Omaha Beach consisted of 2,500 dead Americans. HOWEVER, they had succeeded their mission. After a month a million ally troops had stormed the shore. • August 25, 1944- the allies entered Paris liberating French men, women , and children.

The Germans were unable to break through American lines, but Germans were running short of critical supplies. Each side lost tens of thousands of men. Allies had additional troops, while Germany was running out of soldiers. During Northern Europe's coldest winter in 40 years. American forces won the Battle of the Bulge.

  9. Island hopping (2) Navajo soldiers used their own language to communicate between islands. January 1945 the U.S. army landed on Luzon, Philippines, they later advanced to Manila. After a month of urban warfare they secured the city. The death toll was 14,000 Americans, 350,000 Japanese, and 100,000 Filipino civilians.

  10. Iwo Jima and Okinawa These battles were very costly to the United States. 6,000 Americans died at Iwo Jima and 12,000 at Okinawa. Most of the Japanese rather die than surrender. Towards the end of the war, the Japanese used a different style of combat. This was called Kamikaze missions. After Hitler’s defeat we began bombarding the Japanese islands.
