  2. Electoral College • Group of electors who meet to vote for the president. • When you and I vote, we are not actually voting for the president but rather for the electors.

  3. Each state has a specific amount of electors (electoral votes) • Representatives + Senators = electoral votes • CA – 55 • FL – 27 • MN-10 • Whatever candidate wins the popular vote wins all the electoral votes for that state.

  4. You win the election based on the electoral vote not the popular vote • i.e – Gore had more votes, but Bush had more electoral votes, so Bush won -There are 538 electoral votes -You need 270 to win.

  5. 2000 Election • Florida was the swing state • The election couldn’t be called, too close • Recount certain counties in FL • It goes all the way to the SC – Bush v Gore • Gore wants to do more recounts • Bush wants to stop the recount • The Court rules to stop the recounts, thus declaring Bush the winner.
