  1. Source G is from Roderick MacLeod, a witness to the evictions , quoted in Gloomy Memories (1857) by Donald MacLeod Source G I saw the townships set on fire. Grummore with sixteen houses and Archmildh with four. All the houses were burnt with the exception of one. A barn. Few if any of the families knew where to turn their heads or from whom to get their next meal. It was sad, the driving awa of these people. How useful is Source G as evidence of the conditions suffered by the Highland people during the Clearances?

Source H is an account by Catherine McPhee, written in the 1880’s, describing what she saw in 1848 Source H Women had to put three children in carts beside their husbands, who were tied up and unable to assist them. Helpless men were tied up to the pier and then thrown like cargo into the hold of the ship. They all left for the streets of Glasgow or the frozen wastes of Canada. Many of them died of hunger or fever going across the ocean. Only God knows the evil work of that day. How useful is Source H as evidence of the conditions suffered by the Highlanders during the Highland Clearances?

  3. Source L is a first-hand description of the Clearances from Estates owner, Francis Clark in 1851. Source L I have been increasing my sheep stock as the removal of crofters made space. The crofters could not pay their rents. The population, which was 500, is reduced to 150. Five of the families got crofts on other properties. Two of the crofters are in Tobermory; all the others went to America, Australia or the south of Scotland. How useful is Source H as evidence of the conditions suffered by the Highlanders during the Highland Clearances?

Source M is taken from a television interview with Lord Strathnaver, a descendant of Highland Landowner, the countess of Sutherland, speaking in 1992 Source M The people who lived on the estate…were really in the process of starving to death and were living in disgraceful conditions, conditions that no civilised person could have supported, and which certainly would no be tolerated for half a second today. How useful is Source M as evidence of the conditions suffered by the Highlanders during the Highland Clearances?
