Living history • Ann Rinaldi makes history come alive. • Character Emily Pigbush, age 14, is relatable, someone you’d want to be friends with. • Is set in Washington, D.C., centered around the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Emily’s Uncle Valentine is called to tend to Lincoln in his last hours, and her best friend Annie’s brother and mother are implicated in the conspiracy.

Emotion packed • Emily is a civil war orphan, whose mother dies early in the book. • Emily has to decide between going to school and taking up a trade. • Emily’s best friend Annie’s mother is in prison, on trial for her life. • Emily doesn’t know if she can trust Uncle Valentine, the man she is forced to stay with. • Emily gets secret letters from Johnny, but finds herself being drawn toward Robert, her Uncle’s assistant.

Action packed • The city is in chaos over the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln • Emily is approached in her sleep by a freed slave who is living in the attic, who wants her to spring her free. • Emily’s archenemy, Myra Mott, is determined to make her life miserable and expose her uncle’s shady dealings. • Emily herself gets involved with the sinister business of stealing corpses.
