  1. Byzantine Empire and Constantinople A change for Christianity

  2. So where was it?

Constantinople • The Emperor Constantine was a new founded, devoted Christian that had converted to Christianity during a battle with a common rival. • Constantine was losing the fight when he “saw a vision of a cross” in the sky. • After his vision, he thought it was a sign from Jesus telling him to convert to Christianity and he would win the battle to expand his empire.

  4. Constantinople • After his victory Constantine had a city named for him and it was called “Constantinople” • As emperor, Constantine removed bans against the practice of Christianity. Remember-everyone was polytheistic or practiced Judaism, so this was a big deal!! • Constantinople was built on the site of an ancient Greek trading city called Byzantium. Its location between two seas protected the city from attack and let the city control trade between Europe and Asia.

Justinian Empire • Justinian was an emperor that ruled the Byzantine Empire from 527-565. • After the Old Roman empire had fallen, it was his passion to reunite the empire with its traditional ways. • He sent his army to retake Italy. After he did so, he not only controlled Italy, but the majority of the Mediterranean coasts.

Justinian • Justinian’s other passion, besides reuniting old with new Rome was the Law and Religion. • He ordered officials to remove any out of date or unchristian laws. • He then organized the laws Into a legal system called Justinian’s Code. These laws Brought more fairness to all of The empires people.

Justinian continued.. • Despite his achievements, Justinian made many enemies. • Two groups of these enemies joined together and tried to over throw him in 532. • This scared him so much he thought about abandoning his empire, but his wife stepped up and convinced him to stay. • Justinian’s wife, Theodora helped her husband rule effectively. With her advice, he found a way To end the riots. Justinian’s soldiers killed over 30,000 rioters and saved the throne
