  1. 9 Questions To Ask Before Planning a Kitchen Remodel

  2. A kitchen remodel is an exciting home improvement project to undertake, and in many cases, can increase the resale value of a property. However, it’s important to carefully consider everything that may impact the remodel, and answering the following 9 questions before beginning to plan anything with your chosen contractor: 1. How long do you plan to live in the home? Are you remodeling the kitchen to sell your home, or do you plan to live in it for the foreseeable future? A forever home will mean that the kitchen should be to your taste, whereas with a remodel to sell, you can choose generic but neutral designs and materials.

  3. 2. What design should it be? Again, if remodeling in a home you plan to remain in, design will need to be carefully considered; visiting showrooms and online catalogues can help you choose. 3. What would your kitchen really benefit from? Would your kitchen benefit from more storage, seating space or natural light, for example? Think about what would really showcase your kitchen and be sure to discuss your ideas with your chosen renovation contractor.

  4. 4. Where are your plumbing lines located? If working with an experienced renovation company, their contractors will source the plumbing lines and fit any upgrades or changes in around them. 5. What kind of cooking style do you have? This can have a major impact on how you plan to remodel your kitchen in terms of countertops, and space for appliances etc. If you love to cook and bake, then the focus will be on the range and food prep areas, and if there are usually more than one of you cooking in the kitchen at any one time, consider the layout to ensure that there’s ample room for manoeuvre without bumping into one another.

  5. 6. What lighting do you want in your kitchen? Do you prefer natural light? In which case, see if you can fit bigger windows into your kitchen, more of them, or even a large skylight. If natural light is at a minimum, do you want to focus on bright LED lights, softer under cabinet lighting, or a range of different lighting to suit different occasions? 7. What appliances do you want to be included? For a large induction stove, for example, you’ll need to consider space, and if you don’t have a separate area for your washer/dryer, you may need to incorporate them into your kitchen design. For smaller appliances such as mixers, kettles and toasters, make sure you have enough countertops to hold them all.

  6. 8. Do you want to include a pantry? If so, then you’ll need to consider how this will affect other aspects of your kitchen, such as storage and floor space. 9. How much money can you spend? Depending on the scale and style of your kitchen remodel, the cost can vary hugely, so it’s important to determine your budget before entering the planning stage, as this will help you and your contractor select a design and choose materials within the right price range.

  7. You may have more questions about planning to remodel your kitchen, and if so, you should talk them over with a local remodeling firm. They’ll be able to better guide you as to what your options are after assessing your existing kitchen and reviewing your needs.
