The War Measures Act “Enemy Aliens”- While the war served in one sense to bring Canada together as a nation, it also served to marginalize significant parts of the population - There were approximately 500, 000 German, Austrian & Hungarian people living in Canada at this time - In response to wide-spread fear and suspicion, the federal government used the War Measure Act to ensure the“security, defence, peace, order and welfare of Canada”

The War Measures Act - This act empowered police and other officials to arrest or search Canadians without pressing charges or acquiring a warrant. - More than 8597 “enemy aliens” were moved to and held in internment camps for the duration of the war. These were labour camps with very harsh conditions. - Many families were deported back to their ancestral countries

  4. The War Measures Act - This practise dwindled as the labour shortage in Canada reached a critical point - To add further fuel to the fire, the government passed the Wartime Elections Act, which removed voting rights from individuals born in enemy countries
