In March 2014, AFL Victoria Country collaborated with various community umpiring associations to identify the essential traits and characteristics of a prototype community umpire. This initiative was part of the 2014 V/Line Umpire Academy Program and aimed to enhance the skills and professionalism of community umpires. The collaborative efforts involved workshops where umpires shared insights on umpiring approaches, decision-making, communication, nutrition, and leadership skills, resulting in a comprehensive list of desired umpiring qualities to improve performance and community respect.
