  1. Reports from ALICE Working Group Daicui Zhou

Scientific Significance • China has a large, active and internationally recognizedcommunity working in ultra-relativistic heavy ion physics since its start in 1986. • The physics potential at LHC will largely extend and surpass the scientific possibilities of past and present accelerators. It is the place to do frontline research in heavy ion physics after 2007. • To detect and analyze the large amount of particles produced in heavy ion collisions, ALICE hardware and software is very challenging and at the forefront of technology.

  3. ALICE Status • There are 30 countries and 90 institutes, including Europe, USA, Russia, Japan, India, South Korea. Of the 30 countries, China is the only country that has not yet signed the MoU with CERN/ALICE. • Production is on going except that the Chinese commitment to PHOS FEE mass production is delayed due to the funding problem. • With the support from NSFC, CMoE and the three institutes, Chinese team has worked actively and productively over the last 12 years on the R&D for ALICE/PHOS. The prototype of FEE card has been successfully developed and tested.

  4. Proposal • In order to continue in ALICE, going from R&D to participation in the construction and going from simulation towards physics analysis, the participation of China has to be put on a formal basis. • The MoU to be signed by the Chinese government • Financial supports from MoST, NSFC and CMoE for PHOS FEE production and continued participation in physics analysis • ALICE teams would be interested to participate in a Tier 1 in China to support the data analyses of all four experiments at LHC

  5. Future Prospects • On the medium term (up to 2008), other Chinese groups active in heavy ion physics may be interested to join ALICE • One group has already expressed its interest.
