Working Group Reports Working Group 1 Software System Design and Implementation for Environmental Modeling Gene Whelan, Ph.D. Olaf David, PhD. U.S. EPA-ORD Colorado State University/USDA-ARS Athens, GA Ft. Collins, CA 2011 ISCMEM Annual General Meeting NRC Headquarters Rockville, MD November 28-29, 2011
Purpose Foster the exchange of information about environmental modeling tools, modeling frameworks, and environmental monitoring databases
Objectives • Harmonize existing and evolving environmental modeling systems • Investigate and provide guidance and deployable tools for use by multiple frameworks • Promote the standardization of data exchange protocols
Working Group 1 Activities/Projects • Framework Assimilation of Models, Databases, and Files • Proposed to ISCMEM October 2010 • Demonstrate/Document the linkage of two models in various IEM frameworks • Pending. Why? Source Release Fate & Transport GALE LADTAP-II Risk Assessment
ISCMEM Activity? • If the proposed activity • Meets the intent of the ISCMEM charter • Involves multiple chartered Federal agencies • Meets WG1 Purpose and Objectives • Survives a member’s peer-review process • Meets funding obligations • then this could be a candidate for an ISCMEM activity Most of our work meet these criteria, yet the participating Federal agencies and projects are not aware of each other.
Examples of ISCMEM GrayActivities Gray activities are those that meet the charter, purpose, and objectives of ISCMEM but are not officially registered/sanctioned as ISCMEM activities
Integrated Environmental • Modeling Summit • December 2010 • 57 participants, 25 world organizations • Develop an IEM Roadmap to the Future • Science, Technology, Applications, Organizations
Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) • Current Activity • Develop Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) • Use IEM to Link Process-based Models and MLR Model • Access Databases and Retrieve Datasets • Demonstrate PC cluster/Virtual Machine • Use Inverse Modeling and S/U Tools • Link to Sanitary Surveys • EPA, USGS, USDA, NOAA, The States, ACoE Manitowoc, WI
Data Access, • Retrieval, and Analysis • Fall 2010, Summer 2011, Current Activity • Data for Environmental Modeling (D4EM) • EPA, USDA, CUAHSI, GLRI Consortium
Environmental Fate Simulator • Current Activity • Properties Estimator and Database • Data delivery system to IEM Models • Chemicals, Radionuclides, Microbes, etc. • SERDP Project: EPA, DOE-PNNL, ACoE
EPA’s Integrated Trans-disciplinary Research (ITR) Programs • Current Activity • Sustainability in Four+ Areas • Interoperability, Across-ORD and Beyond • Integrated Public Health Evaluation of Pathogens • Global to Genome Project Water Communities Chemicals Air/Climate/Energy
Why? • Current Approach • ISCMEM initiates bringing groups together for collaborative research • Implied funding source • ISCMEM is the sanctioning body • Extended Approach • Promote scientific exchanges and collaborations • Many projects already exist, are funded, and have been reviewed and sanctioned by their agency, who also happens to be a member of ISCMEM • Agency initiates and sanctions efforts
Action Items • Host monthly ISCMEM seminars to facilitate scientific transfer and potential collaborations • Formalize Grayactivities/projects with ISCMEM • Identify collaborations that help solve existing problems (i.e., cheaper, faster, easier) • Coordinate activities between Working Groups (e.g., WG2: Chernobyl Assessment) • Share results of WG efforts on an accessible web site – iemHUB.org – Training sessions?
