Rajesh Rao’s Brain Powered Robot • This research tackles the issue of computers being unable to understand input from inconsistent sources. • Brain waves emitted by thought are consistent for all humans, unlike oral or physical commands. • This two foot tall robot, Morpheus, is controlled completely by thoughts, through brain waves interpreted by electrodes on a cap worn by the user.

Professor Rao describes his project: “My students and I are investigating these questions using a combination of probabilistic techniques, computer simulations, and collaborative neurobiological experiments. Such an interdisciplinary approach has provided functional interpretations of several otherwise puzzling neurobiological properties while at the same time suggesting biologically-inspired solutions to problems in computer vision, robotics and artificial intelligence.” The project has received large amounts of media coverage in addition to many prestigious awards. The University of Washington CSE department now offers a class based on this technology: CSE/NEUBEH 528: Computational Neuroscience.
