  2. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Project Context A city is a system of humanity, integral to the development of civilization. The ability to not just live but to thrive, expand and innovate in dense quarters has defined us as a species and shaped our culture and our lives. In the last sixty years, the rate of urbanization and suburbanization of our planet has greatly accelerated. The city is everywhere, and with modern information and communication technologies, can literally connect most of the habitable space on this earth. With this capacity has come a growing realization that how we use our power and skills is more critical than ever. SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College

  3. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Project Context We have built infrastructure to distribute and support the industrialized lifestyle we enjoy. This infrastructure is coming to the end of its useful life span, and much of it is in need of repair, renovation, restructuring or replacement. If we are to make the massive change required for a world house, we will need to reinvent our cities. We will need to coordinate a balance between our personal ambitions, and our need for community and our global responsibility. The City Systems Project will propose new ways of living that will affect this kind of change. SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College

  4. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Project Goals • The City Systems Project will propose new ways of living that will affect this kind of change. Areas of investigation will include: • Sustainable and affordable construction options • Sustainable greening strategies • Human impact of shared public spaces in low, medium and high density residential areas • Sustainable living patterns • Innovative infrastructure design solutions in other cities SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College

  5. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Methodology This project investigated the history of cities as systems and produced a synthesized exhibit that delivered this information in an educational and fun way. Students spent a semester researching all the elements that make up a city, creating a city systems matrix and a timeline of the history of city systems that ultimately formed the basis for a unique message exhibit. SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College

  6. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Results The end result of this project was a successful and popular exhibit entitled “People Power Public Space”. This exhibit was an exploration of urban life, weaving a narrative that ties together individual and collective experiences with the systems that make the city possible and illustrating the power of individuals to activate public space. The audience is invited to join in the process by illuminating the central message: People Power Public Space. SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College

  9. OCE Project Presentation | April 28, 2010 Outcomes In January 2010 this exhibit was displayed at the Interior Design Show. It received the top student exhibit prize from the show sponsor, Rado, and was widely acclaimed as one of the most innovative and message-driven exhibits at the show. In February 2010 the exhibit was open to the public at the F Gallery at 207 Adelaide Street East. In April 2010 the exhibit was invited to show at the Fabrica Del Vapore, an exhibit show in parallel with the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Italy. More than 10,000 international attendees viewed the booth and had the opportunity to ride the bicycle that powered the message, People Power Public Space. In June 2010 the exhibit will be shown as a part of the Institute without Boundaries year-end City Systems Show. SCHOOL OF DESIGN George Brown College
