  2. What is the Personal Project? Creative piece of work of your choice. Your project to do what you want to do. It needs to be something you really want to do.

  3. Why Should I Do A Personal Project? • I want to do something completely independent in an area that interests me. • I am interested in taking IB Diploma classes or other challenging classes my junior and senior year and this will help prepare me. • Because it sounds different - I will get to direct my own learning and….. it will be fun!!! • Edison is an IB World School, and it is strongly encouraged that all 10th grade students do a Personal Project.

Personal Project SHOULD: Have a clear and achievable goal Allow you to express a truly personal message Be the result of your initiative, creativity and ability to organize and plan Reflect your special interests, hobbies, special abilities, or concerns about particular issues Deal with a topic or area to which you are committed Be entirely your own work (authenticity is very important)

  11. Personal Project SHOULD: Be focused on at least one Area of Interaction: Health and Social Education Community and Service Environments Human Ingenuity

  12. Personal Project SHOULD NOT: Be part of any graded course work Take over your whole personal and social life, nor interfere with your studies, even though it will involve many hours of work Be too closely linked to any specific subject

  13. Basic Components Process Journal Project Itself Written Report (doesn’t actually have to be ‘written’)

Brainstorming Questions • What topics interest you? • What hobbies or interests do you have that might grow into a Personal Project? • Is there something you’ve always wanted to do or something you would like to do better? • What improvements could you make to your community? • Is there a question you’ve always wanted to know the answer to? Is there an idea you want to explore further?

  15. Personal Project Forms • Physical creation: • Original work of art • Original science experiment • Invention • Business or organizational plan • Written Product: • Written piece of work on your topic • Creative writing

  16. Timeline 2011-12 • Phase 3 Creating & Evaluating—November-February • Phase 4 Presentation—March • Phase 1 Investigation & Design—June-September • Phase 2 Planning—October

  17. Next Steps before October Meeting • Narrow down your topic and decide what type of product you will create (physical creation or written product). • Read through the Personal Project Guide. • Turn in the “Personal Project Topic Notification Form” to Ms. Donna or Ms. Ornelas by this Friday, October 1. • We will match you with a supervisor. • Start a process journal and write answers to the “Phase 1 Worksheet: Investigation and Design” before you meet with your supervisor.
