Establishment of the new university Process • NIHE undertakes a feasibility study in 2010 • A case for having a university in the Province was made • A presentation was done to the Provincial Legislature • A consultative meeting was held in November 2010 with the Minister, Provincial Government and stakeholders on the outcome of the study • The Minister supports the need to have a university in Mpumalanga
In 2011 the Minister appoints a Task Team headed by Prof Thandwa Mthembu (CUT) • The Task Team identified and recommended possible university sites to the Minister • The Minister appoints the New Universities Project Management Team (PMT) (Northern Cape and Mpumalanga) • The NIHE and PMT visit identified sites culminating in the choice of the Lowveld Agricultural College as the site for the new university (11 sites in total)
The Minister establishes the University Project Steering Committee • President Zuma announces the establishment of the 2 new universities in July 2012, including the sites in Mbombela and Kimberley • The Minister calls for names for the university • The Minister calls for nominations for the Interim Council • The Minister announces the university name “University of Mpumalanga” at LAC as well as the Interim Council Members

The Siyabuswa Campus becomes part of the university • The programmes to be offered at UMP in 2014 are – • B. Agric – 20 students – LAC (Sponsor UKZN) • Diploma in Hospitality – 20 students – MRTT (Sponsor UJ) • B. Ed Foundation Phase – 108 students (Siyabuswa Campus) (Sponsor UJ) • Architectural Competition was advertised in May 2013 • Budget of R1.2 billion – 10 year plan • Student population – 15,000; 60% in university accommodation)
Interim Council • 2 Meetings and third in October • Communication between IC members - setting up and start up issues • Working towards appointing an interim management team • The launch of the University of Mpumalanga will take place on 31 October 2013 • Announcement of the results of the Architectural Competition
Sol Plaatje University (NC) • Launch took place on 19 September – Proffs Shongwe and Mokadi attended • Announcement of the Architectural Competition results on 18 September • De Beers Consolidated Mines provided R96m support • Sishen Iron Ore Community Development Trust – bursary scheme of R20m • Minister Dr Blade Nzimande - emphasis on Public and Private Sector Partnership • Same challenge to Mpumalanga !
