  3. Transportation System

  4. Transportation Engineering is a branch or basic area of civil engineering which deals with design , development , construction and maintenance of ……. Transportation Engineering

  5. Roadways Harbours Tunnels Bridges Docks Airports Railways

  6. RailWays…

  7. AirWays..

  8. Role Of Transportation in National Development Easy and quick transportation of men, goods, animals , material , etc. Area, which are connected by proper means of transport, can develop fast. During the days of emergency it plays a vital role for quick and easy transportation .

  9. Modes of Transportation Roads Railways Waterways Airways

  10. Road Transport or Road Ways • National Highways • State Highways • District Road • Village Road

  11. Classification of roads based on Material • Earthen Roads • Water bound macadam roads • Bituminous roads or tar roads • Cement Concrete Road

  12. What transportation sub-systems are present in this picture.

  13. Types Of Pavement • Flexible Pavement: The earthen, gravel, water bound macadam and Bituminous roads are also known as flexible pavements because the top surface takes the shape of the sub-surface soil. • Rigid Pavement: The Cement Concrete roads are known as rigid Pavements because of their stiffness and their capacity to bridge over loose soil pockets in the sub-grade.

  14. Merits of Road • It is Economical structure. • It is very convenient for passenger and small goods Transport. • Destination and starting points are not necessarily defined. • Small vehicles can be driven on roads for personalized transport.

  15. Demerits of Road • Tractive resistance of wheels of vehicles to the road Is more, hence there is early wear to the road pavement. • Overall maintenance of road is more. • There is a speed limit or speed is restricted. • It is suitable for small distance only.

  16. Thank You
