  15. abuse • mean words or treatment • Black people had to deal with a great deal of physical abuse before the civil rights movement in the 1960’s.

  16. challenge • disagree with, take a stand against • Few people dared to challenge the way things were before the civil rights movement.

  17. compete • try to win a contest or game • Jackie Robinson helped the Dodgers compete against other teams.

  18. cruel • mean • Some people feel that testing products on animals is cruel.

  19. hostility • hateful actions, mean thoughts • Jackie Robinson had to deal with hostility from opposing fans.

  20. humiliation • feeling of shame or embarrassment • Jews felt humiliation when they were forced to scrub the sidewalks by the Nazis.

  30. Directions Express Likes and Dislikes • Use your T-Chart to write 5 questions you have about Jackie Robinson on an index card. Make sure to: • Ask questions correctly • Use vocabulary words • Use an action verb • Practice saying your sentences to a partner. Try to remember them. • When you are ready raise your hand and when I come to you put your sentences card away and I will hear you speak. • While I listen to others you should be practicing with a partner and when you are finished, work on the vocabulary handout .
