  1. Early Religions: Confucianism A religion/philosophy , established by a Chinese philosopher, Confucius By: Se-Young, Mike, Khalil, R. C, Chris and Usma

  2. Confucianism • Confucianism is more of a philosophy, rather that a religion. It was established by Confucius, an ancient Chinese philosopher. The most fundamental lesson of Confucianism is that you need to be moral and be able to control yourself if you wish to accomplish anything greater. Confucianism was the major philosophy for many political leaders of East Asia for thousands of years.

  3. Where it All Began • Confucius was born in the province of “Lu”, in the year 551 BC • His mother was the first teacher of Confucius • Father was a commander of the region “Lu” • Confucius was a well educated man when his mother died in his early 20’s which greatly effected his life • Became a teacher/preacher after the passing of his mother • He built a reputation as man of virtue who cherished Chinese culture • A religion/ philosophy that would greatly impact the Easter Asia was born • After Confucius’ death, Confucianism was the practiced for thousands of years in East Asia.

The Founder and Influential Figures of Confucianism • Confucius - influential ancient Chinese thinker philosopher, founder of Confucianism • Mencius - One of the main interpreters of Confucianism; wrote The Mencius, a key Confucian scriptural text (372-289 BCE) • Toegye Yi Hwang – prominent Korean Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1501-1570) • Yulgok Yi I - prominent Korean Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1536-1584)

Beliefs Ethical Teachings Values Li-includes ritual, propriety, etiquette Hsiao -love within the family: love of parents for their children and of children for their parents Yi -righteousness Xin -honesty and trustworthiness Jen -benevolence, humaneness towards others; the highest Confucian virtue Chung - loyalty to the state

  7. Birth • T'ai-shen: Is the spirit of the fetus. It protects the mother from harm and deals harshly with anyone who harasses her. After the baby is born the mother is given a special diet and is allowed 1 months rest. The mothers family of origin supplies all items needed for the baby for the first, fourth, and twelfth anniversary of the birth.

Confucian Rituals/ Ceremonies • There are many unique Confucian rituals and ceremonies. • Modern Traditional Confucian Marriage is a very long and confusing process. • Many people from East Asia still marry in a Confucian wedding. However, many people are turning their back on this special ceremony because of the amount of time and money it takes.

  9. Funeral is a ritual that is very significant to the person who passed away and the rest of the family. In the funeral, relatives wear clothes made out of jute. After all close relativeand friends have visited the funeral, they bury the dead body on either a mountain or a flat plain. Traditionally, after the death of a father or a mother, the eldest son lives beside the grave for three years. However, nowadays, many people don’t have time to do so. Therefore, they only stay for thee days.

  12. Around the World • Claims 600,000,000 adherents around the world • Majority East Asia (China, Japan, Korea, etc.) • Little to none in Latin America

  13. Influence in 21st Century • Is currently very influential in Korea and Japan (very big part of East Asian life style) • In China, practices have been severely restricted (Mao Zedong) • Becoming popular in Canada and rest of Western World • Teachings of leadership and responsibility
