Proverbs 20. Proverbs 20. (Prov 20:2 NKJV) The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life. Striving is Easy. (Prov 20:3 NKJV) It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.

  3. (Prov 20:2 NKJV) The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion; Whoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

  4. Striving is Easy • (Prov 20:3 NKJV) It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel. • (Prov 20:3 NCV) Foolish people are always fighting, but avoiding quarrels will bring you honor.

  5. Again: Laziness does not produce • (Prov 20:4 NKJV) The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing. • (Prov 20:4 NIV) A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing.

  6. Wise counsel needs explanation. • (Prov 20:5 NKJV) Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water,But a man of understanding will draw it out. • (Prov 20:5 TLB) Though good advice lies deep within a counselor's heart, the wise man will draw it out.

  7. It’s Hard to find a trustworthy friend • (Prov 20:6 NKJV) Most men will proclaim each his own goodness, But who can find a faithful man? • (Prov 20:6 TLB) Most people will tell you what loyal friends they are, but are they telling the truth?

  8. The Righteous leads his children

  9. Children are beneficiaries of good parents. • (Prov 20:7 NKJV) The righteous man walks in his integrity; His children are blessed after him. • (Prov 20:7 NCV) The good people who live honest lives will be a blessing to their children.

  10. The King and Judgment • (Prov 20:8 NKJV) A king who sits on the throne of judgment Scatters all evil with his eyes. • (Prov 20:8 NIV) When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes. • (Prov 20:8 NASB) A king who sits on the throne of justice Disperses all evil with his eyes.

  11. No One is Perfect • (Prov 20:9 NKJV) Who can say, "I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin"? • (Prov 20:9 NCV) No one can say, "I am innocent;I have never done anything wrong."

  12. Be Honest in BusinessRepeated in 20:23 • (Prov 20:10 NKJV) Diverse weights and diverse measures, They are both alike, an abomination to the LORD. • (Prov 20:10 TLB) The Lord despises every kind of cheating.

  13. Even a child is known by his doings • (Prov 20:11 KJV) Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. • (Prov 20:11 TLB) The character of even a child can be known by the way he acts--whether what he does is pure and right.

  14. God has given sight & hearing • (Prov 20:12 NKJV) The hearing ear and the seeing eye, The LORD has made them both. • (Prov 20:12 TLB) If you have good eyesight and good hearing, thank God who gave them to you.

  15. Be a hard worker • (Prov 20:13 NKJV) Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty; Open your eyes, and you will be satisfied with bread. • (Prov 20:13 TLB) If you love sleep, you will end in poverty. Stay awake, work hard, and there will be plenty to eat!

  16. Haggling over the price • (Prov 20:14 NKJV) "It is good for nothing," cries the buyer; But when he has gone his way, then he boasts. • (Prov 20:14 TLB) "Utterly worthless!" says the buyer as he haggles over the price. But afterwards he brags about his bargain!

  17. Good Judgment is Valuable • (Prov 20:15 NKJV) There is gold and a multitude of rubies,But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. • (Prov 20:15 TLB) Good sense is far more valuable than gold or precious jewels. • (Prov 20:15 NCV) There is gold and plenty of rubies, but only a few people speak with knowledge.

  18. A text, difficult to translate. • (Prov 20:16 NKJV) Take the garment of one who is surety for a stranger, And hold it as a pledge when it is for a seductress. • The Hebrew text, however, gives “strangers” in the masculine plural, and is probably right, the feminine being the reading of the margin, • Albert Barnes

Adam Clarke’s Comments • Pro 20:16 • Take his garment that is surety for a stranger - I suppose the meaning to be, If a stranger or unknown person become surety in a case, greater caution should be used,and such security taken from this stranger as would prevent him from running away from his engagements.

  20. The “Joy” of cheating is short lived • (Prov 20:17 NASB) Bread obtained by falsehood is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel. • (Prov 20:17 TLB) Some men enjoy cheating, but the cake they buy with such ill-gotten gain will turn to gravel in their mouths.

  21. Get advise – then proceed. • (Prov 20:18 NKJV) Plans are established by counsel; By wise counsel wage war. • (Prov 20:18 NCV) Get advice if you want your plans to work. If you go to war, get the advice of others.

  22. Be careful to whom you say things • (Prov 20:19 NKJV) He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with one who flatters with his lips. • (Prov 20:19 NCV) Gossips can't keep secrets, so avoid people who talk too much.

  23. How do you gain wealth quickly? • (Prov 20:21 NASB) An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning, Will not be blessed in the end. • (Prov 20:21 TLB) Quick wealth is not a blessing in the end.

  24. Be Honest in Business • (Prov 20:23 NASB) Differing weights are an abomination to the LORD, And a false scale is not good. • (Prov 20:23 TLB) The Lord loathes all cheating and dishonesty.

  25. Think before you commit! • (Prov 20:25 TLB) It is foolish and rash to make a promise to the Lord before counting the cost. • (Prov 20:25 NIV) It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows.

  26. The Lord's searchlight • (Prov 20:27 KJV) The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly. • (Prov 20:27 TLB) A man's conscience is the Lord's searchlight exposing his hidden motives.

  27. Keeping the Kingdom • (Prov 20:28 NKJV) Mercy and truth preserve the king, And by lovingkindness he upholds his throne. • (Prov 20:28 TLB) If a king is kind, honest, and fair, his kingdom stands secure.

  28. Proverbs 20:29. The hoary (silver or grey) head is a crown of glory, ...

  29. The value of age • (Prov 20:29 NKJV) The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men is their gray head. • (Prov 20:29 TLB) The glory of young men is their strength; of old men, their experience.

  30. Is this what this verse means?

  31. The purpose of Punishment • (Prov 20:30 NASB) Stripes that wound scour away evil, And strokes reach the innermost parts. • (Prov 20:30 NIV) Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being. (The one quoted) • (Prov 20:30 TLB) Punishment that hurts chases evil from the heart. • (Prov 20:30 NCV) Hard punishment will get rid of evil, and whippings can change an evil heart.

  32. Lessons Learned • Parts of Proverbs are obvious and hard to miss • Others are more obscure, and challenge even the best of minds. • As with all of the Bible, there are many lessons for life. • (Rom 15:4 NKJV) For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
