British Actions that increased opposition… • British changed the terms of parole, requiring men on parole to fight for the British • British forces (and Tory forces) treated folks harshly • burning churches • looting/confiscating homes • harassing and exiling citizens Who are these folks??? This behavior will turn many against the British who then form partisan bands

  3. Partisans • Fought a “guerrilla war” against the Br “regular army”. • Guerrilla Warfare • tactic in which small groups of soldiers harass or launch surprise attacks on their enemy then suddenly disappear. Partisans often took Br soldiers in the countryside of SC by surprise in hit & run ambushes and sabotage

  4. Thomas Sumter • His home was burned by British. He responded by rallying back country men into a partisan fighting force. • Hit and run guerrilla tactics and his tenacity earned him the nickname “Gamecock”. • His forces attacked British supply lines and loyalist forces in the midlands/UpCountry giving hope to the Patriot cause.

  5. Francis Marion • Known as the “Swamp Fox” • Led African Americans and colonists in the swamps of the Pee Dee region (northeast coast) He and his men would fight the British and flee through the low country swamps; the British were unprepared to fight in this area.

  6. Andrew Pickens • Known as the “Wizard Owl” • Fought in the Up Country • At the Battle of Cowpens he will lead a partisan force We will discuss this battle later…

  7. William Harden No image available • Captured in the fall of CT, paroled and returned to his plantation near Beaufort • Recruits partisan force and harasses the enemy in the Combahee R. region (south of CT)
