What is the Brain Injury Association of Ohio? • Statewide education & advocacy organization for people with brain injury & their families • Affiliated with BIAA (Brain Injury Association) - 1 of 44 State Affiliates • Grassroots/Consumer Directed Organization, started by families, medical & rehabilitation professionals • Non-Profit, Tax Exempt Organization incorporated in 1983

BIAOH’s Services & Supports • Information & Resource Coordination: • Helpline • Community Support Network (CSN) field offices located throughout the state • Education & Training • Peer Support • Outreach & Prevention • Advocacy • Transition Coordination Services through HOME CHOICE (contract with ODJFS)

What is BIAOH’s Purpose? • Vision: A world where all preventable brain injuries are prevented, all unpreventable brain injuries are minimized and all individuals who have experienced brain injury maximize their quality of life • Mission: To create a better future through brain injury prevention, research, education and advocacy

BIAOH Values (& Core Supports) Collaboration and Solidarity Community Capacity Building by providing information and resource coordination and collaboration among community programs Prevention & outreach initiatives provided, Community Support Network (CSN) offices provided in communities across the state, State Helpline Excellence & Integrity Education and trainings provided to local regions, Annual State Conference Self Determination Resource Coordination provided for individuals and families Individual Dignity & Self Worth Support group linkage for families, Accessible lending library, State Helpline Inclusion & Community Support Public policy promoted & system changes to improve services to individuals with brain injury and the their families Transition Coordination Ohio Home Choice Provider Building Bridges:Comparing Our Goals Ohio Family and Children First: Shared Accountability Plan OFCF is a partnership of state and local government, communities and families that enhances the well-being of Ohio’s children and families.

  10. HRSA Grant The Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commissions was again awarded the HRSA grant for 2009-2013 • Identified Need: Ohio needs more awareness of TBI-related services and coordination among public agencies that provide these services.

HRSA Grant: Work Plan (as it relates to Ohio Family & Children First) • Goal # 1 Promote greater TBI recognition, understanding, and accommodation-skill acquisition among community based providers through the development of web-based training modules. Designed for Cross-system applicability, the web based modules will target community-based providers within Ohio’s Family and Children First and Ohio National Guard OIF/OEF service systems -(these web-based modules will be provided by Ohio Valley Center)

HRSA Grant: Work Plan (as it relates to Ohio Family & Children First) • Goal # 2 Enhance capacity of Ohio’s TBI-specific resource coordination system to respond to the needs of the community-based providers assisting individuals with TBI and their families within the OhioFamily & Children First and OIF/OEF National Guard programs. *Continue to measure and survey need of families and individuals

HRSA Grant: Work Plan (as it relates to Ohio Family & Children First) • Goal # 3 Expand the geographic reach of BIAOH’s Community Support Network System, and it’s staff outreach to local Family & Children First Councils and the Ohio National Guard’s six regional Family Assistance Centers. (*Expand CSN locations across the state)

HRSA Grant: Work Plan (as it relates to Ohio Family & Children First) • Goal # 4 Improve the Brain Injury Association of Ohio’s capacity to collect, retrieve, and generate reports showing an increase in resource coordination services provided through its Helpline and Community Support Networks progress to those within Ohio’s Family & Children First and Ohio National Guard OIF/OEF service systems.

HRSA Grant: Work Plan (as it relates to Ohio Family & Children First) • Goal # 5 Strengthen Ohio’s emerging TBI Caregiver’s Alliance by promoting its effectiveness in providing family members with information, education, and peer support as well as its ability to influence public policy and program development.
