  1. SOUTH KOREA GyeongjuDonggung Palace and Wolji Pond

  2. Wolji was an artificial pond on the grounds of the royal palace in Silla and has been called Anapji since the Joseon Dynasty. Excavation resulted in more than 30,000 cultural artifacts reco-vered from the pond as well as the surrounding building sites. The Wolji Exhibition Hall in the Museum displays the extravagant daily lives of the royal family and artistocrats of Silla

  3. Gyeongju was the former capital of the Silla Kingdom, which ruled Korea from the 7th to the 9th centuries. From the first day of his reign, King Munmu had to go to the battlefield every day. Silla became the first unified state of the Korean peninsula, after a long and tortuous war of conquest. In the final stage of completing the unification of the three states, King Munmu created a beautiful garden in his palace to demonstrate the power of the Silla royal family. This was ‘Wolji Pond.’

  4. Wolji Pond measures 200 m from east to west, and 180 m from north to south. The edges on the southern and western sides are straight, but the edges on the north and east are winding curves. Because of this, the whole view of the pond cannot be seen from any one part. A meticulous calculation was made to make the pond look like a sea with no end in sight. The three artificial islands in the pond also make it look more like a sea.

  5. GyeongjuDonggung Palace and Wolji Pond was a secondary palace used by the crown prince of the Silla Kingdom. It also served as a banquet site for important national events and important visitors

  6. Wolji is part of Gyeongju National Park

  7. After the fall of Silla, the site was abandoned and forgotten. The pond was referred to as "Anapji" from the Goryeo and Joseon periods and onwards. In the 1980s, a pottery fragment with the letters “Wolji” (a pond that reflects the moon) carved onto it was found, revealing the true name of the pond. After the discovery, the site was renamed to the current Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond.

  8. The one building has a very nice diorama and artifacts with explanations were detailed in multiple languages making it easy to understand As part of the renovation project of historic sites in Gyeongju, Wolji was dredged and rebuilt in 1974. Gyeongju city government tried to work on restoration project once again in 2018 but it was suspended because UNESCO opposed the project The Gyeongju National Museum

  9. When you touch one of the images of items from Gyeongju National Museum presented on a huge transparent screen, you get all the information instantly The Shilla dynasty king’s unique crown of Korea: of famed and dazzling gold ginkgo leaves, reminiscent of the other Baekje site of Jeonju.
