  1. Vary Sentence Beginnings

  2. Add an Appositive Appositive: - a noun or pronoun placed beside another noun or pronoun to identify or explain it. - set off by commas Examples: Audubon, an artist and naturalist, painted birds. The explorers saw a strange animal, something with fur and a bill like a duck’s.

  3. Add Three Adjectives Adjective: modifies a noun or pronoun Examples: Old, worn, but useful, the map was still a source of information for the explorer. Rusty, bent, and dull, the key would not open the lock.

  4. Add two verbs Verb: a word used to express action Note: do not use the state of being verbs Examples: Observing and recording, the scientist reported details about the ant colony. Concentrating and reviewing, Brittany studied her notes for the test.

  5. Add a Prepositional Phrase Preposition: a word used to show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word Examples: Under the tree, Katie played with her dolls. During Advisory Period, Chelsea completed her math homework.

  6. Add a Transition Transition: - show how ideas are related - point out the passage of time (chronological order) Examples: Before I knew it, I dropped my camera. Meanwhile, Kristi prepared the decorations for the party.
