    4. Why Deploy WLAN Bridging? Cost 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridges are inexpensive, unlicensed, and do not involve any reoccurring charges. Choices are typically Telco circuits or Fiber. Telco circuits incur a setup cost and a monthly cost. A single T1/E1 charge can range anywhere from about $500/month up to $1,500/month depending on region, number of lines and features. Fiber installation can be very costly. Fiber interfaces can be expensive, but other costs include the fiber cable itself, trenching, conduits, laying and cutting the cable, connectorization, and right of way permits. A recent customer chose 3Coms WLAN bridges instead of fiber because it was going to cost nearly $40,000 to link 2 buildings approximately mile apart.

    5. Why Deploy WLAN Bridging? Time A 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridge link can usually be setup and working within a couple of hours. Telco circuits requires scheduling with the local carrier, and coordination of effort during setup and ongoing maintenance. Fiber installations usually needs to be cleared by the local utilities first since trenching is involved. The city or county might need to be involved for right of way issues if the cabling will be placed across land that is not owned by the customer. There are myriad issues that come up during installation of fiber that require additional troubleshooting and time.

    6. Why Deploy WLAN Bridging? Speed 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridges can create links up to 108Mbps with throughput up to 40+Mbps. Throughput is variable and dependent on such issues as distance, antenna type / gain, beam-width, local EMI and physical signal interference. A T1/E1 circuit has a maximum capacity of 1.5 to 2.0Mbps. The only way to get more bandwidth is to buy more circuits at an additional monthly charge, replace those circuits with higher capacity and higher cost circuits, or employ expensive compression devices with a noticeable but limited bandwidth improvement.

    7. Why Deploy WLAN Bridging? Security 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridges offers a variety of security options; the strongest of which is WPA2 with AES, but also support WPA/TKIP, 802.1X, Local & RADIUS MAC authentication, and 64.128.152 bit WEP 3Com WLAN Building to Building Bridges use WDS (Wireless Distribution System) as the bridging protocol rather than Client Bridging. This makes it more difficult for clients to try to connect to bridge traffic

    8. Why Deploy WLAN Bridging? Flexibility 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridges can be located anywhere wireless coverage is required. Durable weatherproof housings with internal lightning protection assure reliable operation year round. Access point & bridging functionality can be combined on the same unit, allowing units to be located throughout parks, campus environments, shopping malls, etc., with a wireless backhaul link providing access to the wired data network. 3Com Outdoor WLAN bridges come as a complete kit which includes both a wall mounting bracket and a pole mounting bracket, providing for a wide variety of mounting possibilities.

    9. Why WLAN Bridging ? Concerns with Telco Circuits Cost Monthly expense of US$500 - US$1000+ Speed typically 1.5-2.0 Mb/s throughput (or less if fractional) Security Data sent across public telephone network Concerns with Fiber Cost Additional infrastructure to support fiber, cost of fiber cable & trenching Expertise - Specialized tools for connectors, training for working with fiber Time & Paperwork - Right of way / zoning issues

    11. 3Com Outdoor WLAN AP/Bridge Dual Radio, 802.11a + 802.11b/g Embedded 5 GHz 17 dBi panel antenna, ideal for bridging applications Supports AP, bridge and repeater modes on each radio Modes can be combined within the same unit Ideal for creating 802.11b/g hotspots with 802.11a backhaul Summary of Main Features High speed bridging using 802.11a or 802.11b/g Enterprise Security Easy installation, configuration and diagnostics Point to Point and Point to Multi-point applications Local AP functionality provides hot-spot capability

    12. Feature Rich Provides point-to-point bridging, point-to-multipoint bridging, access point, or repeater modes independently on each radio Supports 108 Mb/s Super A and Super G, as well as Turbo A and Turbo G (Atheros proprietary, not available in all modes) Supports up to 4 SSIDs per radio, 8 per unit Diversity antenna support for 802.11b/g LED signal strength meter for aligning bridge endpoints Detailed CLI & WEB GUI WMM QoS enables simultaneous support of voice, video, and data Strong authentication and encryption options, including WPA/TKIP, WPA2/AES, 802.1X authenticator & supplicant, local & RADIUS MAC authentication, and 64/128/152 bit WEP

    14. Radio Modes of Operation Access Point: Operates as an access point for wireless clients, providing connectivity to a wired LAN. Bridge: Operates as a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint bridge to other access points. Repeater: Operates as a wireless repeater, extending the range of existing access points for remote wireless clients. Each radio can be configured independently, combining the modes within a single unit.
