In this passage (Mt. 21:10), Jesus enters Jerusalem to celebrate Passover, fulfilling prophecies and teaching valuable lessons. He blesses children, challenges a rich young ruler, promises treasure in heaven, heals the blind, spends time with repentant sinners, and fulfills prophecies by approaching Jerusalem on a donkey. In Luke 18 and 19, Jesus is on his final trip to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover, knowing exactly what he would face. “Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. And they understood none of these things:” (Luke 18:31-34)
It’s interesting to note how Jesus spent his time on that final journey to Jerusalem. 1. Blesses Children. Lk 18:15-7. “whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall in no wise enter therein.” Vs. 17
2. Challenges a Rich Young Ruler to lay up treasures in heaven. (Vs 18-23) 21 “If thou wilt be perfect…go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.”
3. Promises vast eternal treasures to those who are willing to faithfully follow him. (28-30) • “And every one that hath forsaken … for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, (that’s 10,000% interest!) and shall inherit everlasting life.” • Warns them (again) of his purpose. (30-35) ”shall be delivered…mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.” “They understood none of these things.”
5. He spends time with a repentant Zacchaeus (19:1-10) “For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
6. Jesus recognizes their temporary focus “because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear.” and tells the parable of the Noblemen and His 10 servants who were called to give account of their stewardship. (19:11-27) Each were given 1 pound (mina) (about 100 dinarii or 4 months average wage) To invest for Him! “occupy until I come.” vs 13
“occupy until I come.” vs 13 The faithful were greatly rewarded. • “Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.” The faithless (preoccupied) lost everything. • “Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.”
Mary anoints his feet “for my burial” (Jn. 12:1-11) 7. Spends the night at Bethany with Friends. (Lazarus, Martha, and Mary)
8. Fulfils prophecy by approaching Jerusalem on a Donkey. Luke 19:28-44: Zech 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.”
8. Fulfils prophecy by approaching Jerusalem on a Donkey. Luke 19:28-44: Mt 21:8-10 “a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.”
9. He pauses to weep over Jerusalem. (19:41-44) “he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.”
10. He then marches into the Temple and drives out the money changers and teaches the multitudes. Luke 19:45-48
“And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, “Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 Based on the events of days preceding this “triumphal entry”, how can we answer that question?
Mt 18:10 “despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” So…“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 1) Jesus loves Children! (child-like faith) Lk 18:15-17
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 2. Jesus is concerned about our Stewardship! (Priorities) A. Five of the events of his past week dealt with how people use money! 1) The Rich Young Ruler. Luke 18:18-23 2) Wealthy People and Faith. Luke 18:24-27 3) The Disciples. Luke 18:28-30 4) Zacchaeus. Luke 19:1-10 5) The Ten Servants. Lk. 19:11-27
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 3. Jesus is concerned about helping the blind to “see”. (Lk 18:35-43; John 9) “The Gospel is hid …to them that are lost, in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ… should shine unto them. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” 2 Cor 4:3-6
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 4. Jesus longs to be loved. (Jn 11,12) (Lazarus, Martha and Mary) “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 5. Jesus concerned about God’s word. A. Entered Jerusalem exactly according to scripture. (Lk 19: 28-44; Zech. 9:9) “behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” Eventually He’ll come back in Power! (Rev. 19:11-21)
“If thou hadst known, …the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.” Luke 19:42 “Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 6. Jesus is grieved over our ignorance and indifference to God’s plan.
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 7. Jesus is angry at those who put obstacles between people and God! Lk. 19:45-48 “Is it not written, (Is. 56:7; Jer. 7:11) My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.” Mark 11:17
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 8. Jesus is a threat to the status quo. Luke 19:47 “he taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests…scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him”
“Who is this?” Mt. 21:10 9. Jesus is attractive, Someone others were drawn to. Luke 19:48 “And could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him.”
“the multitudes cried…Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord” Matthew 21:9 But within a few days the praise turned to persecution. “What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him.” Mark 15:12-13 So what changed?
There were two questions asked about Jesus during his final week that changed their destiny? Mt. 21:10 “Who is this? • And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.” Mark 15:12 Pilate asked: “What will ye then… do unto him whom ye call the King…?” The multitude answered: “Crucify him…we have no King but Caesar”
Each human destiny hangs on how we answer those same two questions? • Mt. 21:10 “Who is this?” Mt 16:15 “whom say ye that I am?”
Mark 15:12 “What will ye then… do unto him whom ye call the King…?” “I am crucifed with Christ, nevertheless I live, Christ liveth in me.” Gal. 2:20 “Crucified to themselves the Son of God.” Heb. 6:6
Lk 6:46 “why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” If Jesus isn’t really “Lord of all” your life; Then he isn’t really “Lord at all!”
