  1. SCORING THE CTS, AND CROSS TABULATION USING ANSWER SHEETS • Illustrates Individual level Research • Lab Projects Will Use “macro” or societal level method • The Research Question • Is having experienced corporal punishment by parents related to a higher probability of hitting a dating partner? • What is a hypothesis? • What is your hypothesis?

  2.  CONFLICT TACTICS SCALES – VIOLENCE SCALE QUESTIONS SPSS IDV NAMEQ # ASSAULT – MINOR CCAMS1 208 THREW SOMETHING AT PARTNER THAT COULD HURT CCAMS2 210 TWISTED MY PARTNER'S ARM OR HAIR CCAMS3 218 PUSHED OR SHOVED MY PARTNER CCAMS4 246 GRABBED MY PARTNER CCAMS5 254 SLAPPED MY PARTNER ASSAULT - SEVERE CCASS1 222 USED A KNIFE OR GUN ON MY PARTNER CCASS2 228 PUNCHED PARTNER OR HIT PARTNER WITH CCASS3 234 CHOKED MY PARTNER CCASS4 238 SLAMMED PARTNER AGAINST A WALL CCASS5 244 BEAT UP MY PARTNER CCASS6 262 BURNED OR SCALDED MY PARTNER PURPOSE CCASS7 274 I KICKED MY PARTNER

  3. SCORING THE CTS For simplicity we will score only the “minor violence” scale of the CTS. If there is time, we will repeat the process for “Severe Violence” If answer 1 through 6 is marked for one or more of the following, write a 1 in the upper left corner. If NONE are marked 1-6 (I.e. ALL are marked 7 or 8) write a zero. 208 210 218 246 254

  4. TESTING THE HYPOTHESIS USING CROSS TABULATION CROSS TABULATION USING THE ANSWER SHEETS Illustrates using data on the characteristics/behavior of Individual persons   Rest of the semester will focus on using data on the characteristics of social groups

  5. CROSS TAB ASSAULT BY CORPORAL PUNISHMENT • MEASURE OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT: = Q 105 • “When I was less then 12 years old, I was spanked or hit a lot by my mother or father.” • 1 = Strongly disagree • 2 = Disagree • 3 = Agree • 4 = Strongly Agree • CROSS TAB: • * Sort answer sheets on basis of Q105 into 4 GROUPS • * Count the number of 1’s and 0’s in each group • Convert to percent of each group • * Does the percent who hit a partner go up?

  6. WHAT DO THE RESULTS SHOW IN RESPECT TO: HOW MUCH CORPORAL PUNISHMENT WAS THERE? WHAT IS THE RELATION OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT TO HITTING A DATING PARTNER?

  7. IF THE PERCENT DOES NOT INCREASE, WHY COULD BE THE REASON? Small sample and chance variation Sample has special characteristics – not a representative sample There is no relationship The measures are not accurate – not valid Other ??? WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE MEASURES OF CORPORAL PUNISHMENT? VIOLENCE? OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS

  8. COMPUTER DEMONSTRATION: TEST THE SAME HYPOTHESIS WITH ENTIRE INTERNATIONAL DATING VIOLENCE STUDY SAMPLE Huge sample, many countries Provides “test of significance” in addition to the percentages Test of significance tells you the probability that the results could be just a chance occurrence. Does not provide informaition on “significance” in the sense of importance CTAMSP, CTASSP (ROWS) BY VS01, VS02 (COLUMNS), Col %
