Introduction to Design: • Technological Design: This course principally focused on Engineering Design and the Design Process. • All manufactured products begin with a design intent: intentional goals underlying the design elements. The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Question: Why do larger denomination coins have serrations on the edges while smaller denominations, like pennies, have smooth edges? The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Answer: Years ago, unscrupulous individuals would file or cut the edges off silver coins. It was decided to incorporate a feature into the coins that would alert the public of coins that had been shaved in this manner. The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Question: Tennis balls were originally smooth, why were they changed to add the fuzziness? The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Answer: • slower speeds • improved control through longer contact with the racket strings • less painful if struck by ball The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Computer Diskette: • Consider a common diskette. What intentional design elements can you think of ? The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Computer Diskette: • Asymmetrical design • - prevents user from inserting incorrectly • Movable switch • - enables user to lock disk thereby • preventing re-writing • Material Choice • - ensures reasonable • level of durability The Design Process
Introduction to Design: • Engineering Design can be one of the most challenging, • but also one of the most rewarding areas in engineering. • It requires that you not only apply all your available knowledge, but also that you be creative in the search for a solution. • In one form or another, you can find examples of it in every aspect of our lives. Technological Design Course Outline TDJ-2O0
Course Description • Technological Design, Open (CADD) TDJ 20O • Students will learn the following: • application of the Design Process: identify user needs related to specified design problems; • the physical properties of selected materials and their application in product design; • techniques to create physical products and services; various presentation techniques, • how to test and evaluate design solutions; and the implications of technology on the development of products or services. They will also become aware of design-related careers. • This is an introductory course concentrating on AutoCAD/Inventor to create Mechanical drawings and 3D renderings. • Prerequisite: None TDJ 2O0- Technological Design
Course Objectives • Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: • Define and apply the “the design process" to create unique design solutions . • Communicate Design intent using various means including drafting , presentation , rendering and other software's. • Apply decision-making processes to guide a design process. • Construct simple functional and structural models of designs. • Use a variety of computer tools to aid in developing and documenting designs. The Design Process
Course Structure • Course is divided between discussion and project work. • Discussion topics will aid students in preparation of projects and assignments • See (lecture schedule document)
Course Structure (con’t) • Design projects as assigned: • Investigation analysis • Communication of Ideas • Presentations • Peer and self evaluations The Design Process
