  1. Childhood obesity: Quality Improvement in Pediatric Clinics AAP Section of Medical Students, Residents, & Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT) 2010-2011 Advocacy Campaign

  2. Overview • Childhood obesity is a rising epidemic • 30% of the pediatric population has a BMI of 30% or greater • Co-morbidities: diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, low self-esteem, depression

Overview In February 2010, the AAP teamed up with the White House, Bright Futures, & other national organizations to reverse childhood obesity, and launched the AAP Obesity Initiative and “Let’s Move!” Campaign. Together they made the ambitious goal to reverse childhood obesity within a generation, to give children born today a healthier future tomorrow.

  4. Overview Each year the AAP SOMSRFT (Section of Medical Students, Residents, & Fellowship Trainees) launches a national advocacy campaign. This year we have launched Team Healthy, our national campaign to reverse childhood obesity. Through this we are teaming up with the AAP Obesity Initiative and First Lady’s Let’s Move! Campaign.

Phase 1 & NOW Phase 2 Earlier this year we introduced phase 1 of our campaign on Community Policy Advocacy www.aap.org/ypn/r/advocacy/obesity.html Now we are introducing phase 2: Quality Improvement in the Clinic • Pre-designed clinic intervention tools • Easy to meet your program’s requirements to participate in a QI project each year • 2 simple goals…

  8. Let’s Move! Pledge "I support the Let’s Move! initiative and will provide counseling for optimal nutrition and physical activity at all ages. I will measure height and weight for all infants, and will calculate and discuss BMI at well child visits for all children 2 years and older. This is my move to raise a healthier generation of kids and to help solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation."

Goal 1 - Pledge • FREE trip to Peds21/NCE for one resident • ALL residents in program MUST pledge in order to be entered in the drawing • Deadline to be consider for drawing: 6/30/11 2. Goal 2 – Clinic Quality Check • FREE trip to Peds21/NCE for one resident • The Resident Champion for the clinic must complete all 3 steps in order to be entered in the drawing • Deadline to be consider for drawing: 9/1/11 *** Additional opportunities for recognition may become available.
