  2. Setting • There are many different settings in this book but the main setting is during the summer in Kabul, Afghanistan. But the story also takes place in a bombed out apartment, the market, and in the graveyard.

  3. Characters

  4. Conflict • The Taliban burst through the door and beat her father and arrest him for having a foreign education. Parvana hit them but they pushed her down, then dragging her fathers body down the broken concrete steps. • This is a Man vs Man and a Man vs Society.

  5. Summary of Plot Parvana goes to work each day with her dad to help him walk, but when he gets arrested Parvana is forced to transform herself into a boy so she can work. She meets her friend Shauzia from school that has also transformed into a boy. But when there was little money, Parvana and Shauzia dig up bones to sell. When Nooria, Parvanas sister gets married she is left by herself. When Parvana finds out that Where Nooria is going is Taliban territory she is forced to search for her family.

  6. Theme 1. Being angry at Nooria gave Parvana energy to work (20) 2.Up until then, she had seen Talibs only as men who beat women and arrested her father. Could they have feelings of sorrow, like other human beings? (80) “ Keep your heads down boys.” a kind voice above Parvana said. “ There will be time enough when you are allowed to see such things.” (121)

  7. Point of View • The Narrator tells the feelings of the character. It’s a good way to tell this story because you know a physical description of the characters and how they think.

  8. Symbolism • This symbolizes that we are very lucky and that we should be thankful for what we have because other people aren’t as lucky and don’t have as much freedom.

  9. Recommendation • I recommend this book to everyone because it is a real eye opener to all that don’t know how life is outside of the U.S.A.
