  3. When asked to write a response, you should respond by restating the question in a way that answers the prompt! Examples: 1. How does the author use figurative language to enhance the tone of the passage? “A” The author uses figurative language to enhance the tone of ___ in the passage by ___. How does the structure of the passage enhance the author’s argument? “A” The author’s argument is enhanced by the chronological order (or sequential order… or other structural term). A= Answer the question.

  4. After you answered the question, you need to back it up with an example describing WHY your answer is correct! Examples: How does the author use figurative language to enhance the tone of the passage? “A” The author uses figurative language to enhance the tone of ___ in the passage by ___. “C”= “The author uses imagery in the passage when she states, _______ (English Teacher 1). 2. C= Cite your resources (give an example)

  5. After you gave an example, you have to explain how it answers your question! Examples: How does the author use figurative language to enhance the tone of the passage? “A” =The author uses figurative language to enhance the tone of ___ in the passage by ___. “C”= “The author uses imagery in the passage when she states, _______ (English Teacher 1). “E”= This quote shows the tone of _____ through the use of the words “…., …., and ….” 2. The argument is clear to the reader as he/she reads the passage. E= Explain your example

Examples: How does the author use figurative language to enhance the tone of the passage? “A” =The author uses figurative language to enhance the tone of ___ in the passage by ___. “C”= The author uses imagery in the passage when she states, “_______” (English Teacher 1). “E”= This quote shows the tone of _____ through the use of the words “…., …., and ….” “S”= Overall, the author uses examples of figurative language to convey the tone. 2. 7. These are the TOP FIVE things I need to know when citing a resource: • When quoting something someone else said, I need to put quotes around the quote! • Example: The author stated, “Baba grumbled something under his breath” (Hosseini111). • When I restate something the author said, but I put it in my own words, I still need to identify where it came from. • Example: Baba didn’t want to be heard when he made his remark (Hosseini111). How to cite appropriately!

  8. These are the TOP FIVE things I need to know when citing a resource: When I include a direct quote or summary of a fact I didn’t create on my own, I must include the author’s name and the page number in parenthesis. Example: (author pg #) • 4. When abbreviating a quotation, use an ellipses (…) to shorten it in the middle. Make sure to include the first couple and last couple of words. • Example: Quote: “I wanted to tell him I was sorry, but suddenly I was salivating, the back of my throat tasting of bile” (Hosseini111) • Example: Ellipses: “I wanted to… tasting of bile” (Hosseini111). How to cite appropriately!

  9. These are the TOP FIVE things I need to know when citing a resource: • When inserting a quote or summary of ideas into my paragraph, I must introduce the quote or provide an explanation after it! • Examples of introduction: • -The author states, • -The character said, • -In the book, (article, poem, etc), it states, • Examples of explanation: • “…” the author stated (author pg). • “…” the character exclaimed (author pg). • “…” was stated when the author wanted to explain _____ (author pg). How to cite appropriately!
