  1. Survey of Land Remote Sensing Satellites IKONOS, Worldview, Landsat, IRS, MODIS

  2. Landsat 8

  3. Space is crowded… • Many satellites useful for land remote sensing • Will cover characteristics of a few commonly used satellites today • Also many past satellites have archived data that can be used to look back or to compare past with present (change detection)

  4. Space Junk Low earth orbit (left) High earth orbit (below) From NASA Earth Observatory

  5. Present and future sensors • According to the ASPRS Guide to Land Remote Sensing, civil (not military) satellites with spatial resolution better than 39 meters and either in orbit or planned through 2011 (most recent edition) include: • Optical – 31 in orbit, 27 planned • Radar – 4 in orbit, 9 planned • 23 countries are funding satellites

  6. Land remote sensing satellites ordered by spatial resolution (from ASPRS Guide)

  7. Ordering Landsat Data • Path/Row • GloVis tool at the USGS: http://glovis.usgs.gov/ • WyomingView Wyoming imagery • University of Maryland GLCF site: http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/index.shtml • Scene size: 185 km x 185 km

  8. Choosing a satellite (summary) • What spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolutions do you need for your application? • How much money do you have? • Are satellite data available for the dates you are studying (satellite operational dates; clouds; etc.)?
