National Targets for Pupils Achievingat least Level 5 • Schools to set targets for En, Ma and Sc by end of April 2001 for the 2002 tests • LEAs may have to set a minimum target of 65% for En and Ma, and 60% for Sc
GCSE Subject Residuals • A residual is the difference between a pupil’s result in one subject and the average of all their results • When calculated nationally, a residual highlights the differences in difficulty between subjects • The comparison of residuals for a county or school with the national residuals shows the relative attainment of pupils in different subjects • Variations due to differences in ability are removed, since results are compared with other results of the same pupil
An Example of a Residual • A* = 8 points, A = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4, etc • Attainment in maths = Grade C • Attainment in other subjects = A, B, B, D ,E, C • Points score in maths = 5 • Points score in other subjects = 31 • Average score for subjects other than maths is 31/6 = 5.17 • Performance in maths is almost a fifth of a grade lower than the average for all other subjects
Resources • Started in April 1998 - £1.9M • Standards Fund 1999 - £1.7M • Standards Fund 2000 - £4.9M (including just over £1M for Broadband connectivity) • Standards Fund 2001 - £4.93M (including just over £1M for Broadband connectivity) • Standards Fund 2002 - £8M (including £1.5M for Broadband connectivity)

ECDL: A Hertfordshire Initiative • The aim of ECDL is to raise standards of ICT in schools by developing IT skills to an internationally recognised standard • EDCL is being offered to teachers in all Hertfordshire Schools from April 2002 • Teaching assistants, administrative and technical staff may also access this scheme • A pilot scheme will operate prior to this date
What is the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)? • An internationally recognised IT qualification • 7 modules covering basic IT skills, with each module being tested • A qualification awarded by the British Computer Society in the UK
Sources of Help • Look again at the revised themes from National Curriculum 2000 • Look at the non-statutory guidance on the SEU site • Look out for Exemplification of Standards linked to NC and Standards site • What does a level 4 look like? • Use of ICT across the curriculum - helping teachers to make judgements about subject content in addition to the ICT level • ICT Tests in Key Stage 3 (Currently 72% attain level 5)
