Admission into School • All children can start school from the September after their fourth birthday under the changes coming into force from 2011 • Parents are set to have greater flexibility over choosing when their 4 year old starts primary school in the Reception class • The revised School Admissions Code came into force in February 2010 and applies to admission arrangements from September 2011

  3. The Revised School Admissions Code This means that parents will be able to: • Choose when their child can start in the primary reception class full or part-time from the September after their fourth birthday. Parents may defer entry until the compulsory schooling if they wish, within the same academic year – at the point they judge that their child is ready to start. • Choose a free early learning place (15 hours) in other early learning or nursery settings if parents judge their child is not ready for school – so their child can access the Early Years Foundation Stage • Choose to hold back from formal childcare or school up until the compulsory school starting age of 5 – as parents can already do now

  4. Primary Curriculum Review – April 2009 Sir Jim Rose: • Recommended that summer born children should start primary school in the September after their 4th birthday – subject to discussions with parents taking into account their views of a child’s maturity and readiness to start school in the Reception class following their 4th birthday • Pointed out that many children born in July or August are at greater risk of poor educational outcomes than children born earlier in the same school year • Stressed that it was right that parents had the choice for their child of starting from the earliest possible point after their 4th birthday, so those children who need the most support could start school from the earliest possible point • Stated that the transition from early years should be smoothed into Key Stage 1 by extending active, play-based learning for all children, particularly for ‘summer-born’ children

School Admissions in Sheffield At the present time: September intake • Children who have their fifth birthday between 1September and the end of February January intake • Children who have their fifth birthday between 1 March and 31 August Compulsory school starting age • All children should start school in the term following their fifth birthday

  6. School Admissions from September 2011 onwards All children may start school in the September after their fourth birthday – full time or part-time

School Admissions from September 2011 onwards Parents of children aged 4 between 1 September 2010 and 31 December 2010 may choose: School options: • Full time or part time place in September 2011 OR • Wait until compulsory school age – spring term, January 2012 Early Years Setting options: • Part time place in September 2011 (15 hours) OR • Stay at home

Parents of children aged 4 between1 January 2011 and 31 March 2011 School options: • Full time or part time place in September 2011 OR • Full time or part time place in January 2012 OR • Wait until compulsory school age, summer term April 2012 Early Years Setting options: • Part time place in September 2011 (15 hours) OR • Part time place in January 2012 (15 hours) OR • Stay at home …. until compulsory school age, summer term April 2012

Parents of children aged 4 between 1 April and 31 August 2011 School options: • Full time or part time place in September 2011 OR • Full time or part time place in January 2012 OR • Full time or part time place in April 2012 OR • Wait until compulsory school age - autumn term, September 2012. (This will be direct entry into Year 1 and parents will have to re-apply for a school place) Early Years setting options: • Part time place in September 2011 (15 hours) OR • Part time place in January 2012 (15 hours) OR • Part time place in April 2012 (15 hours) OR • Stay at home until compulsory school age, September 2012

Essential Next Steps To Consider • How can we further develop partnership working across the EYFS sector in order to facilitate admission into YR? • Senior leadership to plan for and manage opportunities for key members of staff from school and linked PVI early years settings to work together and develop best practice to meet the needs of children and families • Prioritise time for YR staff to meet with PVI early years setting practitioners to share information about the child to enhance transition • Develop one single record for the child – the format is agreed between school/setting – to monitor and track progress and inform the EYFS profile at the end of YR • Shared curriculum training sessions

Essential Next Steps continued • Be prepared for September 2011 – an audit of EYFS provision to ensure and plan for the delivery of a quality, active, play-based learning environment, indoors and outdoors, to provide an appropriate teaching and learning experiences for all 3 and 4 year olds, appropriate to their age and circumstances • Support parents/carers to make an informed decision of when their child should start in YR • Professional development by the Inclusion and Learning Services to support the implementation of this new admissions system

Key dates for Admissions • National Closing date 15 January 2011 • Allocation Date (Confirmation of places) April 2011 • Any place offered is for the academic year, parents are entitled to defer entry until compulsory school age is reached later in the academic year and that place must be kept open. • Parents cannot defer entry beyond the academic year. • New arrangements will be confirmed to parents in the 2011/12 version of “A Guide for Parents”
