What is AB 1826 • In October 2014 Governor Brown signed AB 1826 Chesbro (Chapter 727, Statutes of 2014), requiring businesses to recycle their organic waste on and after April 1, 2016 • Mandatory recycling of organic waste is the next step toward achieving California’s aggressive recycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals. • Organic waste such as green materials and food materials are recyclable through composting and mulching, and through anaerobic digestion, which can produce renewable energy and fuel. • Reducing the amount of organic materials sent to landfills and increasing the production of compost and mulch are part of the AB 32 (California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006) Scoping Plan.

  3. AB 1826-Mandatory Organics Recycling • As you can see, organics make up 34% of California's waste stream, going to landfills. • It is estimated that the United States, Europe, and Asia combined throw away enough food to the feed the entire worlds population 3 times over.

How much is LAUSD throwing away • In spring of 2015 OEHS ran a pilot at 18 schools to begin to quantify the problem. • During the pilot that only reviewed the lunch program, we hauled on average 1 ton per school, per week of mostly uneaten food. • Republic Services, surveyed each school and determined in any given week, we are throwing out approximately 600 tons of organic waste, including liquid.

  6. Moving Forward Current contract with Republic Services expires on 12/31/16 New RFP is being released on September 09, 2016. Training is still included in new RFP. If decision makes sense, it will be brought to board for approval in December. City of Los Angeles franchise system will be in place tentatively by 01/01/17. Pricing for franchising system will be known by early October 2016
